Would The Buddha Really Have Said “When You Love A Flower, You Water It Daily”?

by Anura Guruge

buddha

I saw this on Facebook Friday, December 16, 2016.

As soon as I saw this it struck me, immediately and viscerally, as incongruous.

Why?

I really don’t remember hearing much about the Buddha, i.e., Gautama Buddha, talking about love! That is true and in my youth I was very immersed in Buddhism and would have remembered if ‘love’ was a major plank of the Buddha’s teaching.

Got me thinking. Gautama Buddha and love! Hhhhmmmm.

This was a man who walked away from his newly born son, supposedly his only child, without a backward glance or any regrets — within 24 hours of the son being born! This was a man who walked away from his doting wife. Why? Because he fretted that life was misery. I only started seeing this aspect of the Buddha over the last 15 – 20 years. I do not see him as what you would call an affectionate person.

Then there is his WHOLE thing about ATTACHMENTS. Love is the ultimate form of attachment.

And then on further reflection I realized that it is very unlikely that the Buddha would have said: “When You Love A Flower, You Water It Daily”.

Three reasons.

  1. This would have created an attachment to a ‘thing’, i.e., the flower, that by nature would soon die. That was anathema to the Buddha. So, that was strike one.
  2. The Buddha was BIG into flowers — as ‘things’ that should be used when meditating, and doing so by focusing on how a fresh, beautiful flower would soon die, wither away and become unsightly. Strike two.
  3. The Buddha would have known that you don’t water a flower per se, and that any amount of watering would not permit it to last ‘that long’. Strike three.

I could be wrong. But, this does not sound like a saying from the Buddha. Enlighten me IF I am wrong. I am all ears.

Thanks. Merry Christmas.

Never mind the $1,695 price tag for this cute — Italian made — purse.

This was priceless.

Only the Trumps could have played such a trump.

I am SURE she had NO idea. And he probably wasn’t that sure either.

That it was day before Armistice Day — very special for US Brits — made it all the more poignant.

Maybe somebody should spend a few weeks with her showing her all the flags of the nations so she knows what not to pick next time.

She will make a FINE U.S. First Lady.

U.S. Police Really Should Be Better Trained To Handle Diplomatic Immunity Claims — In Light Beverly Hills Qatari Clown.

OK. I understand and appreciate that the police could NOT arrest him because they did not see him race either one of the cars. Got that.

But, it says that he, this clown, told them that he had Diplomatic Immunity. And here is MY POINT.

They, i.e., the police, should have been able to verify that, within minutes, with the State Office. There has to be a SYSTEM. We need such a verification system.

I speak of one who did have bona fide Diplomatic Immunity for 3 years (maybe 6) — and even after that, with appropriate authorization, drove ‘CD — plated’, i.e., ‘Corp Diplomatic’, cars in D.C. and Paris (since my adoptive parents were real Diplomats).

I even remember the first time I heard the phrase — ‘diplomatic immunity’. It was in the early 1960s in Ceylon. The Burmese Ambassador to Ceylon chased his wife, down the road, in central Colombo, and shot her dead, in public. Then he, quite rightly (as was his due), claimed diplomatic immunity and just walked back to his residence. He left Colombo a few days later. The police could not touch him. My parents, who even then were staples of the diplomatic scene, knew the Ambassador and his gunned down wife. There was much consternation in our household.

Many decades later, in August 1992, the phrase again cropped up this time in ‘our’ household. My adoptive mother, 62, with various illnesses (though none truly life threatening), died, unexpectedly, in her sleep, in Paris. The French authorities wanted an autopsy performed. My adoptive father said there was no need for one — and reminded them that ‘they’ had immunity, i.e., French laws did not apply to them. I did NOT have a say, and all this happened even before I knew of the death — because I was in the U.S. (and had my phone ‘off-the-hook’ because I had just got back from a gruelling trip to Israel and did not want my Israeli colleagues calling me, as they were wont to do, at 6 am). I really would have liked to see the results of an autopsy.

So, I speak with someone who knows a bit about D.I. — Diplomatic Immunity.

I have a feeling he did NOT have Diplomatic Immunity. Just because you are a royal does not give you immunity. Immunity goes with an official ‘post’ — e.g., an Ambassador. Yes, then his family get it — but I am sure it only applies to children who are minors. Immunity is granted, in each country, by the State Department of THAT country and they sure have a list.

IF this idiot did NOT have immunity he should have been arrested for making a FALSE claim to the police. That is my point.

Police in Paris, from my experience, were very savvy about D.I.

Police in D.C., from my experience, were not as conversant BUT knew some of the basics.

Police in Alton, New Hampshire, where I now live probably would never have heard of it. And that is WHY all police should be given at least 15 minutes of training SO that they know enough to call somebody …

Get it?

Sri Lanka Have To Have Thrown Away Christmas Day 4th ODI Against Pakistan — In Protest Of Being Forced To Play On A Holiday.

Even by Sri Lanka’s often erratic standards this was quite a thrashing.

8 wickets and 8.5 overs to spare. It wasn’t even close. They were not even in the same league.

Lost the series too.

Then it occurred to me … and, as ever, I am the first to admit it. I am slow on the uptake. Always have been.

The Sri Lankan players, used to having Christmas off, irrespective of whether they worship their balls or not
(or even worse try to French kiss their bats) as you can often see on TV, must have decided to throw the match
— call it a day early.

He puts the ball on the ground and worships it too. I gag each and every time!

Nearly 9 overs short. That is like 45 minutes

Bravo to them. Well they showed that they have balls.

But, to be fair, it was probably done within the wider more
institutionalized framework of match fixing!

So that was a bonus for many.

Oh, dear … what has the world come to?

The Pakistani’s, who don’t celebrate Christmas, nonetheless got a wonderful Christmas present.
No wonder they are prancing around.

It is just NOT cricket.

Sri Lanka, contrary to what the misguided, delusional Buddhist fundamentalists might claim, is still a multicultural, multireligious country with even a Catholic cardinal.

Sri Lanka has always celebrated Christmas. Acting like uncivilized heathens is so unbecoming.

They deserved to be thrashed in every sense of the word for this affront to the norms.

The President should be ashamed, groveling to the cardinal and pope one minute, then permitting this. Am I glad I am not Sri Lankan (other than by the accident of birth).

Rather Surprised That Very Pro-Catholic Sri Lankan President, Married To A Catholic, Is Permitting Sri Lanakan Cricket Team To Play On Christmas.

I do not know this president on a personal basis. I actually can’t even remember his name. I knew two of the early presidents quite well: J.R. and Wijetunga. In my youth I had spent a fair amount of time at the later’s house — and my most vivid memories are stopping by there, on the way back from Kandy, after elections.

What I do know is that this president, who in my opinion, with his habitual red stole likes to look like a pope, is very pro-Catholic. He is good friends with Sri Lanka’s cardinal, the ‘Tanned Ratzinger‘. You can see that he met with the old pope.

So, I am kind of surprised that HE, who is no stranger to Christmas given that his wife is Catholic, permitted the Sri Lankan cricket team to play on Christmas Day. Possible that he didn’t know. From the little that I hear, he has a fair amount on his plate. To me this is very strange.

Growing up one of the most amazing things about life in Ceylon was our tolerance of other religions. My adopted family were Buddhists but I spent all my holidays and weekends with an Uncle, by marriage, who was a Burgher (Dutch descended, and hence white) and a Baptist. He didn’t have any children and he was a lawyer — actually the lawyer for the Ceylon Food Ministry. His wife, my adopted aunty, was the Assistant Principal at Royal College — Ceylon’s then largest and most prestigious boys school (which I didn’t attend). They were well off. They did a lavish, no expense spared Christmas lunch for the whole extended family. But, I stayed with them and got a ton of Christmas presents each Christmas. We celebrated all holidays. That Sri Lankans are acting like we, as a nation, don’t know anything about Christmas is insulting and demeaning.

Yes, I shouldn’t complain. I am not Sri Lankan. So, I probably don’t have the right. But, I was born there.

I was, as I had for the last 72 hours, was on a mission to find the body.

Happened to see this YouTube video with the  ‘… body lies …‘ title. So, of course, I had to watch it.

I only spotted Rajapaksa (who I don’t know) because he stuck out … the lone figure in white
… yes, the Sri Lankan national outfit (sans the red scarf) … but, with the red, makes him look like a wannabe pope
(which would, of course, make his Catholic wife rather happy).

So, from what I can see, he stayed on after the open air memorial service earlier this week.
