I am writing this U.S. Eastern Time (21:00) having only seen half of the Day 4 highlights. Plan to watch the rest within the next hour — while having my customary late dinner.
I like South Africa (and the players) and as you can see here celebrated when they won the 1st Test.
I can’t believe some of the stupid mistakes they have made in the 2nd Test — especially when batting.
Vernon Philander’s runout was INEXCUSABLE. It is not like he is new to the game. What had he been chewing? His bowling was also below par.
Hashim Amla’s runout broke my heart. He was run out. He is such a phlegmatic, nice guy. He should not have gone for that run. If he hadn’t been run out he would have easily scored another 40-runs — easy. That would have made all the difference.
AB de Villiers, of course, batter well, in both innings BUT his dismissal in the 2nd innings, caught behind, off his glove, was NOT worthy of a player of his experience, talent and stature. Come ON. You could have weaved out of the way better, or stepped back and whacked it. It is dismissals like that that lose matches.
IF they WIN, Virat Kohli, as ever, deserves a huge amount of praise and credit. It would NOT have been just his large century, it is his irrepressible, ebullient presence.
Mike Brearley, one of the BEST Test captains ever — and certainly the most cerebral and educated — used to say: “there are captains that wait for things to happen, and others that make things happen”. Kohli definitely falls into the latter category. Just his presence in the field seems to make things happen.
I am keeping my fingers crossed …
