The Looming WINE SHORTAGE: Most Devastating Shortage Of Them ALL.

by Anura Guruge

Quick Google confirmed my worst FEARS.

Ye Gods!

This is BEYOND my worst nightmare.

Toilet paper shortage. Bothered me none. I always knew I could lay my hands on some kind of paper or get a bidet.

Metamucil shortage. There were alternatives.

WINE SHORTAGE! That is serious. This is no joke. Yes, NOT entirely COVID related. Californian wildfires. Yes, prices have already gone up.

Should I stock up. I should. BUT, herein lies the problem. I will just drink MORE. So, it will be gone. Then WHAT?

Then WHAT?

Maybe I could — maybe I should — now that I am officially old start drinking brandy. That is an idea. I think I could survive on brandy. What do YOU think.

Yike.

Ye Gods.

How To Climb Stairs With Crutches, With Ease, Without Help, After Major Knee Surgery — YouTube Video.

by Anura Guruge

YouTube below.

I had my quadriceps tendon repair surgery,
at ‘
Frisbie Memorial Hospital‘ —
performed by Dr. Charles Blitzer
of ‘Seacoast Orthopedics
on Thursday, March 7, 2019.

Day #9 since surgery.

Pain is still negligible!

Didn’t take any pain medication, i.e., Aleve or Tylenol, this morning.
Did NOT, luckily, need any opioids.

We live in a 4-story house and to lead my life in full I need to be able to get to all 4 floors. My office, with my main PC (i.e., this which I write with), is on the 4th floor. My 47″ TV, on which I watch cricket, on a daily basis, is on the 1st floor. Kitchen #2, bedroom #3.

Have a routine to minimize the stairs I have to negotiate. In the mornings I don’t go down. LUCKILY have wife and 12-year old who will bring me up coffee, tea, food and WINE. But, during the course of the day I need to go up at least 8 flights of stairs — and for the last couple of nights I am back to working my 3rd shift, i.e., after 10pm.

So, this is how I now climb the stairs. This precludes needing someone to come after me with my crutches. It is not too bad. A tad hard on the shoulders.

I am wearing a Fitbit Versa Lite in this video. It does NOT count floors climbed. But, neither did my Garmin Fenix 5 Plus once I became disabled — because I am not moving my arms enough.

Just Found Out That One Of My GREATEST Fears In Life Is Actually A Phobia! Yikes.

by Anura Guruge

This now, alas, is my 3rd BIGGEST phobia.

The first two, of course, being: ophidiophobia & anthropophobia.

Wow. After this, which, of course, rules my life, comes: cyberphobia.

Yes, I am a mess. Must have a glass of wine to calm my shot nerves.

It will, OF COURSE, a barrel, even BIGGER than that, of red wine, but you get the idea.

I am comfortable with it. At least I am happy and that is more than most.

As soon as I saw this, I could relate — my true inner self.

Cool — eehh?

It Grieves Me So To See Ian Botham Shamelessly Sporting A HUGE Gut. Oh, Ian!

by Anura Guruge

From this August 6, 2018 YouTube video — BELOW. Most recent example I could find. I have seen him, the last two days, on the England vs. India 2nd Test coverage from Lord’s. That is when I noticed it.

Click image to access MY POST from August 14, 2016.

I have, of course, been watching the engrossing England v India 2018 series with increasing fascination. The Tests have been so amazingly gripping that I have been trying to watch as much ball-by-ball coverage and pre-/post-match commentary as possible in addition to my usual consumption of the 1-hour ‘highlights’. That is how I had come to see full, body shots of Ian. It is NOT a pretty sight. I only saw the above video (from August 6, 2018), which quite clearly shows his overspilling belly, when I went looking for a picture to illustrate my point.

Ian and I are British contemporaries, in reality he 3-years my junior. I saw a LOT of him, some in the flesh (in Somerset (with Viv), in Hampshire and at Lord’s), and tons on TV. I like Ian. What is there NOT to like. He is the cricketer’s cricketer.

That is why I am distressed.

Why Ian? Why?

He knows better. He has a daughter with Type 1 diabetes. We also now know that he suffers from impotence! That sounds like an oxymoron. How can OUR Ian Botham be impotent?

This is NOT right.

Yes, he is not the only famous ex-cricketer lugging around a hefty gut.

But, Ian.

Yes, he was ‘BEEFY’ all his adult life. But, never like this.

Yes, I need desperately to lose 20 – 30 pounds. But, luckily (and it just pure luck) my gut is not as big as his — as yet. So, I too suffer.

Please, Ian …

I Am Buying More Wine To Show My Solidarity To Those Affected By The California Wildfires.

by Anura Guruge

From the U.K. “Daily Mail”, October 15, 2017. Click to access original.

So, after my post of yesterday, as to how bad I am feeling about the damage to the Californian wine industry, I decided today to go out and start buying MORE Californian wine to show my support and solidarity. It is a small gesture, BUT it is from the heart. I want to do my part. I urge you to join me in this.

That much of this year’s crop has been gathered is a huge relief. But, we know that the region and wineries are devastated. I just worry that we are going to see a flood of bitter, hard-to-drink South American wine pouring into the country. Resist. Stand with California.

California Wine Country Wildfires Most Likely Will Majorly Spike Wine Prices.

by Anura Guruge

Just Examples. Google for more, much more.

** ** ** ** **

While the human and animal tragedy is palpable and immense, it is NOT as churlish as it may first appear to start thinking about what this is going to do for wine prices. To be fair it was 11-year old Teischan who got me thinking about it as we were watching the news. It resonates with her, to an extent, in that we were in San Francisco & Yosemite area last year, in April.

The economy of that area, as we know, is inexorably linked to wine. Appears that even prior to these devastating fires there had been some major concerns about this year’s crop because of Summer heat that withered the vines. Appears that the crop was down even ahead of the destruction caused by the fires. Plus, the ashes left on the ground can have an impact on the taste of grapes for years to come!

Wine does make a noticeable contribution to the Californian — and thus — U.S. economy. A marked drop in wine revenues will have a ripple effect.

Wine prices at the consumer level are bound to go up and I am not sure whether other countries will be willing to bail us out. This, whichever way you look at it, is not good news for wine lovers — such as I.

A U.S. Study Of 300,000 Americans Claims That A Glass Of Wine A Day Reduces Heart Risks.

by Anura Guruge

This is NOT new news so to speak. I have heard the virtues of ‘one glass of wine a day‘ for years — which is why I follow that advice religiously. What is interesting is that this study, extensive in scope given the 300,000 Americans followed, appears to contradict a recent British study that expressed doubts as to the health benefits of wine (or beer).

I must also confess that at my annual physical, last week (8/8/2017), my doctor, a very nice Indian, also appeared to express skepticism to the state of my health — my daily glass of red wine notwithstanding. He said I was going to die, but he couldn’t be specific. He just knew I was going to die. Not sure when either. He says it is just a hunch he has — that I am going to die.

Periodic Table Game: How Many “In My Element” Can YOU Make, Other Than Beer & Wine.

by Anura Guruge

Yesterday was the 182nd birth anniversary of Dmitri Mendeleev, the creator of the Periodic Table — and Google commemorated it, albeit just in a few countries, with quite a nice Google Doodle.

And then there is this VERY CLEVER “Periodically I am in my Element” T-shirt — the ‘element’ in this case Be (4) + ER (68).

Got me thinking, what OTHER ‘elements’ that we would LIKE to be in can we create using the symbols? I even provide you with a Periodic Table right here.

Yes, if I use 3 symbols I can make MY element: W (74) + I (53) + Ne (10) = WINE. Yes, that makes me HAPPY (in every sense).

I guess because of its connotation as the unknown value there is NO ‘X‘, though there is indeed an Xe (54). So that makes it hard to make my most favorite element though I can get a head start with Se (34).

Go ahead. See what YOU can make it. Enjoy.
