The ‘OnePlus Watch’ Released Today Gets Absolutely & Utterly Panned — Thrashed! Wow.

by Anura Guruge

Click here to read the DAMNING GIZMODO review
— & they are a respected outfit when it comes to gadgets.

Wow. I was NOT expecting that. As the reviewer herself notes, ‘OnePlus’ is noted for delivering very slick & comparatively affordable phones. So, this was a huge surprise.

I was curious about this watch. Though we have never owned a OnePlus phone I have read plenty of good reviews about them.

How can you get the step count off by more than 10,000. That is mind blowing.

As some of you know, I check the step counts on Garmins, Fitbits & OCCASIONALLY Polar & Amazfit. I expect to see some of them off by say 1%. This is damning. Didn’t they TEST. I am at a loss.

Why bother to release a watch if it has so many faults.

A whole team needs to be FIRED.

Well, that is that. I will not bother looking at this watch.

What it says about ‘UltraTrac’ in the
Fenix 5 Plus Owner’s Manual.

There is NO mention in the Owner’s Manual about pre-calibrating or that it is designed for longer than marathon distances.

I triple checked.

Plus, I have used GPS on this ‘course’ at least 100 times!

The problem, as I see it, is the same as that with open water swimming. The gyro dead reckoning is dead wrong.

Here is my response to Garmin.

‘Garmin’ ‘UltraTrac’ GPS Distance Measurement Is A Cruel Joke.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and be shocked.

Click to access my 2018 post.

I am shocked and appalled! This is NOT RIGHT. UltraTrac can’t be this bad — but it is.

That 0.44 mile walk was from Wednesday, April 17, 2019 — my first day off crutches in 6-weeks after my knee surgery. My first walk in 6-weeks. As I am walking I realize that the GPS distance is off — way off. But, I persevered. Today, 2-days later I clocked the distance of just a part of that walk using my car. Just that section came to 0.4 miles and I didn’t even bother driving half of the ‘course’.

This is stupid. Same problem that Garmin has with open water swimming.

There really should not be an issue. It should be able to compute the distance between the GPS reading. It, with my Garmin Fenix 5 Plus, even has the gyroscope to tell it which way I was headed. Very disappointed.

Did a Google on ‘UltraTac’. This is a known and COMMON problem. I am amazed that Garmin hasn’t bothered to fix it.

So, heads-up. Do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT, use UltraTac. It is a joke.

All Of The TV ‘Government Shutdown’ Clocks Are ONE DAY OFF — i.e., Day Short; ’12’ When It Should Be ’13’.

by Anura Guruge

CNN. Go to cnn.com and check.

MSNBC — TV channel. Photo of TV.

WHY?

Because they are counting the DIFFERENCE.

It needs to be INCLUSIVE.

People do it all the time when they are doing dates.

They take the DIFFERENCE between the two days. For some applications that is ‘OK’, BUT not when you are counting something like a SHUTDOWN.

You have to INCLUDE Day 1, in this case, Saturday, December 22, 2018.

My calendar above shows it clearly.

But, try a simple example. Shutdown started Dec. 22. So, how many days shutdown at the end of Dec. 24. It is 3-days, NOT 2.

I actually saw Anderson Cooper talking about the shutdown being in its 13th day, above the CNN clock that said ’12’!

Amazing.

Garmin Fenix 5 Plus: ‘Auto Pause’ Messed Up My GPS + Glonass Distance By About 0.25 Mile!

by Anura Guruge

Compare with map below. Same route.

Today for the first time I had ‘Auto Pause’ enabled on my Garmin Fenix 5 Plus. I went for one of my usual runs — with my two dogs (Golden & Harrier) who do like to stop OFTEN. So, yes, auto pause was kicking in and off — quite often.

This is a run I do, on average twice a week, and have done so for nearly a year. I have run it while wearing: Garmin Vivoactive 3, Fitbit Ionic, Garmin Fenix 5, Garmin Fenix 5 Plus & Polar Vantage V. So, I know what the distances are and do so across multiple watches. I also do this run most of the times with the dogs.

Thus, the only change today was ‘auto pause’. I get to the driveway of my friends’ — and you can see the little squille (top right) when I detoured to see them on a prior run. The GPS reading should have been around 1.6 miles. Today, it was not. Close to 1.5. That was wrong. I ran to my usual 1.75 point. It read 1.6! I ran further. This was further than I have ever run on this route before. I got to 1.65 miles. I gave up. Turned around. I knew I had done 1.75+ miles.

Came home. Didn’t make any detours. Straight back and you can see that. When I got home it read 3.53 miles!

Ah!

I had turned around 1.65 miles. 1.65 x 2 is 3.3 NOT 3.53.

So, obviously GPS was catching up on the way back.

NOT AMUSED. Turned auto pause off. Screw that for a game of checkers.

Pope Paul VI Was A Very Decent Human Being, But He Was NO Saint!

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE. Google for all the coverage you seek.

Pope Paul VI (1897 – 1978), pope from 1963 to 1978, was a GOOD pope, he was also an outstanding human being and had a heart of gold. I like Paul VI. He was a likeable person.

But he is NO Saint. That is not a sin. We can’t all be saints.

The Vatican’s preference of late to try and canonize all recent popes, within just decades of their demise, is DEVALUING the sanctity of sainthood.

The rush to make John Paul II to a saint was unbecoming and it does not sit well with many.

Pope John XXIII earned his and his took longer.

I am sure that Paul VI will be the first to agree that he is NOT a saint.

He had issues and made some serious miscalculations that are still impacting the WORLD when it comes to birth control (his infamous Humanae vitae) and sexuality. And despite his moralistic views on the later, even today there are questions as to HIS sexuality. He was NO saint.

I will, time permitting, elaborate on this in the coming weeks, BUT I want to go on record that I, for one, feel very strongly that canonizing Paul VI, this early and this quickly, is plain wrong and crazy.

Malaysian Airlines MH370: 28 Months In They Think They Have The Search Area Wrong!

by Anura Guruge

Absolute bloody genius.

After 28 months, i.e., 2 years and 4 months, it suddenly dawns on them that they may have got it wrong!

Ah!

I have been telling ‘them’ for that long, i.e., 28 months, that they are looking in the wrong place.

Amazing. Malaysia, China & Australia. Remember Tony Abbott (shown here on right)? Claiming they were ‘so close’. Wreckage will be found soon!

Wow.

Time (& Clock) On Roku Is Wrong, 3 Is 3 to 6 Minutes Fast (… Known Problem).

by Anura Guruge

rokuclocktime

Roku standard screensaver showing (wrong) time.

This wrong time, which has NOTHING to do with timezones, is most obvious if you have a screensaver that displays the Roku time. Then, if like us, you also happen to have a digital clock nearby you will notice that the Roku time is off by 3 to 6 minutes.

This has been going on for quite a long time. Other than being a minor distraction it does not bother me SINCE I never watch any live programs on my Roku. It is always stuff on ‘Catch Up’ mode or on a Watch List.

There is no way to set, or correct, the Roku 3 clock. In other words there is no Date/Clock set/reset function in the Menus.

Roku, as it should, gets the time from a server. And that is the problem.

Roku support, recently, tried to fob this off as being due to your home network router having the wrong time. Most people are NOT buying that. Most modern network/Wi-Fi routers use something called the “Network Time Protocol” (NTP) to automatically (and continually) set the time per some master clocks governing the Internet. IF your router is using NTP (as it probably is) the chances are that it has the BEST possible time in the world and is unlikely to be wrong. (Yes, it is the Internet equivalent of the broadcast atomic time clocks).

For now there is no known fix. The problem is most likely a Roku server issue. I will keep an eye on this for you. Stay tuned.

I haven’t used it but check out the CLOC screensaver app that shows local weather in addition to the time.

Adorama, for one, has the price right. Click to ENLARGE. From Adorama.com.

This would appear to be a ‘Fat Finger‘ problem. They have put the $899.95 price for the KIT against the body. And that appears to have propagated throughout, with the kit being $250 more — as it is supposed to be.

I spoke with an Amazon Rep. just now. Yes, it is possible to speak with Amazon Reps with no hold-time. I do so often. SMILE. I reported the problem and using my persuasive skills even managed to secure myself a small monetary reward for doing so — though Amazon does NOT have a policy for rewarding those that help them keep their product listings kosher. I am happy. Can’t stop smiling. SMILE.

Now that the pope’s very personal correspondence with Polish Anna Teresa Tymieniecka, which began 3-years ahead of him becoming pope, has been made very public by the PBS special it becomes clearer as to why the pope was very explicit that he wanted his ‘personal notes’ — i.e., personal correspondence included — burned upon his death.

As you can see from the excerpt in my book, “The Next Pope — 2011“, this was never done. The pope would not be pleased, though to be fair PBS has yet to find anything truly incriminating.
