I had never heard of ‘Landmark’, ‘Landmark Worldwide’ or  ‘The Landmark Forum’ until I had to look them up. Cracks me up, no end, that they boast about their prowess in ‘relationships’, ‘quality of life’ etc. when they happen to EMPLOY the RUDEST person I have yet to meet.

What is it all about. Has to do with the pink Kindle Paperwhite that Teischan found on the floor of our hotel room when we went to Philadelphia to pick up our XJ8. As documented here I tracked down the owner, spoke to her on the phone and arranged to ship the Kindle back to her. And we did and I told her that she doesn’t have to bother with reimbursing the $6 (or thereabouts) because I was sure I could afford that for a good cause. So about three weeks ago Deanna took great care to ship it, certified, trackable US PS priority mail, inside two padded envelopes to: c/o Landmark Worldwide, 317A West 33rd St., New York, NY 10001. She tracked it all the way, as is her wont, until it was delivered to Landmark Worldwide. That was weeks ago.

This ingrate, who first name begins with “Ma”, has our e-mail and did e-mail us her mailing address etc. I did not want any money BUT it would have been nice to get a one line e-mail saying that she got her damn Kindle and ‘Thank You’. NOTHING. Nada. Deanna asked me whether I heard anything. I said ‘No’. Deanna, always willing to cut people slack, thought that maybe she was going to send us a thank you note by mail. Our address, of course, was on the Priority Mail envelope.

Nothing.

How rude.

So how can ‘Landmark’ CLAIM to help anybody with anything POSITIVE if they employ anybody as crass as this — though I have to say that ‘Landmark’ probably using this employee could do a dynamite course on “How To Be Exceptionally Rude In Life”.

Yes, to be fair it is possible that the Landmark mailroom did not deliver the Kindle to her. That can happen (and I have seen it happen). If so, Landmark still has issues. Yes, it is possible that her e-mail never got to us. But, typically that would generate a bounce at her end and given that I have received at least two e-mails from her it is unlikely that the communication path does not work.

C’est la vie. Least of my problems in life.

Yes, rudeness bothers me. I am, unashamedly, OLD SCHOOL and exceptionally British when it comes to manners. And I am damn proud of it. Oh yes. I can be incredibly, spectacularly rude — both in actions and words. Just like my swearing and anger. I am only rude when provoked, beyond reason — and as you may be able to imagine given my grasp of the vocabulary and words that I probably can be extremely withering. And I am and I then feel incredibly guilty. But, 95% of the time I am polite to the point that it may seem unctuous. But, in reality it is not. Being polite is something you can do for FREE — though part of my protocol, that sometimes drives Deanna to distraction, is that I try not to visit anybody without taking them something. But, ‘please’ and ‘Thank You’ are FREE and I use them liberally. My adoptive mother, born in Ceylon in 1931, during British rule, was an out and out anglophile with tastes and manners straight out of a Victorian novel. She wanted her adopted son to be the perfect little British gent. Her big thing was “Class”. Yes, she was very much into ‘class’ in everything she did.

Amazes me the number of times people ask things of me, by e-mail, without ever including a ‘please’ or ‘thank you’. Remember this idiot from the University of York in the U.K.?

Anywho … time to move on and my next post is one of extreme politeness by a ‘government’ organization. Yes.

Let Me 1st However Say

1. Nicest hotel staff, ever (and as you know I am no stranger to hotels (around the World).

2. I would give the hotel 3.5 out of 5 and will DEFINITELY stay there again.

3. Great location. Right next door to the Betsy Ross House and the U.S. Mint.

4. Room & public areas bright, white and airy. Very welcoming. [Plaster work, in the room, around the outlets, must have been done by the frustrated Orangutan from the zoo.]

5. There was quite the ruckus at the “Coin’s” restaurant when we had dinner there on Saturday night and we ended up with a FREE dinner — as did the three ladies at the table next to us! Our bill was in excess of $60.


As I have mentioned before, Deanna and the kids are HUGE fans of Anthony Melchiorri and “Hotel Impossible” (and that was even before Anthony and I started Tweeting each other). I am not sure exactly how many episodes we have watched but it has to be upwards of 30. So the kids know Anthony’s drill by heart.

Deanna didn’t come with us on this trip because of her bad back. IF she had been there she would have checked the beds for bed bugs even before I had the chance to put the bags down. In the absence of Mum Teischan, 9 years old, decided that she was going to play Anthony.

Within seconds she discovered a white stain on the pillowcase on one of the pillows. While Anthony would go within inches of trying to make sure that you knew EXACTLY what caused the stain I will spare the details and leave it to your imagination. It was white. Teischan and Devanee were both immediately grossed out (in much the same way when Deanna found a used female thong at the Cromwell Harbor Motel, Bar Harbor, Maine (Acadia). Teischan was beside herself. I told her to call up reception. She was too shy/scared. But when we went down for dinner, she marched up to the reception (making sure that Dad was behind her) and told them about the stain. To their credit they sent up a brand new pillow, still in its plastic, and a fresh pillow cover, within minutes of us getting back to the room — after our free dinner.

Teischan stood up on the bed and ran her fingers over the top of the tall bed backrest and found DUST galore. Anthony would have approved of how she did it — sans white gloves. She was NOT impressed.

Now the absolute kicker.

On Sunday evening she found a Kindle Paperwhite, in a pink case, under the bedside table. It was just lying on the floor, not that far in.

That was NOT good.

How could Housekeeping miss a Kindle lying on the floor?

NO, we did NOT give it to reception.

I, using the Setting tabs, found the name of the person it was registered to. I Googled her.

I wanted to find out 2 things:

1/ When did she lose the Kindle?

2/ Did she call the Hotel and what did they say.

On Tuesday (after we got back on Monday night) I spoke with her, on the phone, at her work.

She lost the Kindle 3 weeks ago!

Yes, she had called the Hotel TWICE. They said they couldn’t find any signs of it. THAT IS BAD.

That was why I did not just hand it over to reception. I wanted to make sure the owner gets it. [Right now it is all wrapped up in two layers of bubble-wrap. I will mail it the next time one of us goes into town.]

This was BAD. Though we have a very strict procedure for checking hotel rooms for anything we may have left behind, that could have been us — especially with the kids. So the Wyndham would have just told us — SORRY, it is not in the room. That is bad.

That upsets me. As Anthony will sure point out the General Manager of this hotel needs to address some issues.

A Jaguar has been on the cards since last September — once we got the 1968 Green MGB. Our lease on the KIA Sportage was expiring in May/June 2015 and Devanee and I prevailed that we should get a Jag as the replacement. Initially it was going to be a ‘practical’ AWD X-Type. ‘We’, Devanee & I, looked at quite a few, online, over the winter. We were going to get a British Racing Green (BRG) to match the MGB. But, lets face it the X-Type is not a quintessential Jag.

And then a couple of months ago Deanna let it slip that she would quite FANCY a V-8 Jag. The die was cast. We would get a XJ-8 — because now we had at least a partial vote from Deanna.

I started looking. The KIA goes back May 29. Not many GOOD, ‘low-milage’ Jags for sale in New England — especially NOT New Hampshire. Found a few in Maine and Mass. I waited until we got back from Arizona. Then we were in May and it was time to act.

I checked out various online sites including eBay. I ‘really’ wanted an XJR with the turbos. Could have had one shipped from Houston, Texas BUT getting a car shipped, sight unseen, did not appeal.

Started looking at eBay in earnest. There were a few Jags I liked and they were ALL from ‘European-Cars‘ outside Philadelphia. I had spoken with ‘Dave’, the person listed in all the ads. , preliminarily, about shipping options, before we went to Arizona. A few days after we got back from Canyon de Chelly, and with my latest book published, I felt I had the time to get this done once and for all. I kept on coming back to this 2002 Burgundy XJ8, with ’57K’. Showed it and a few others to Devanee and Deanna. Tesichan didn’t really care one way or another. I knew what Devanee would pick. Deanna is also liked the Burgundy.

I called up Dave on May 8, 2015 — the first Friday after Arizona. We agreed on a price. It was more than double Kelley Blue Book but Kelley really doesn’t have a clue as to what low-milage Jags sell for.

Deanna, with her bad back, would not have been happy driving up from Philadelphia. So the plan, all along, was to go down with the two kids, pick up the Jag and drive it back. The kids had never been to Philadelphia and they have, of late, become avid tourists. Then came the the Brandon Bostian Amtrak 188 crash. We were going to go Thursday, after school, and drive back Friday. Well the best laid plans of mice and men.

The kids and I left at 3:15 am on Saturday morning. Coach to Boston South Station. Amtrak to New York City. Times Square. 6pm Greyhound to Philadelphia. Get there just before 8pm. Wyndham Philadelphia Historic District. All day Sunday and Monday morning to explore. Betsy Ross house, Art Museum, Zoo, Balloon ride, Liberty Bell, horse carriage ride, Rodin exhibit, Chinatown for Dinner, Reading Market for Breakfast, a tour of the Mint AMONG other things. Picked up the Jag, from Dave, at 1pm. Drove back 390 miles. Traffic, in places was horrendous. One spectacular van accident. WOW! We stopped. The car was wonderful. Devanne adores it. Teischan likes it. I am very pleased. No buyer’s remorse at all, at all.

“European-Cars” (also known by at least 2 other names, including “Car Cheer”) is OK. Dave is OK.

You can dismiss most, if NOT ALL, the negative reviews you will find online about them.

I will write separate posts on “European-Cars” & Dave. But, trust me, they are OK. I would buy from Dave again — and there is a pretty good chance that this might happen sooner than you think. SMILE. We are still one car short. Devanee and I both feel that we really must have an Jaguar XJS to drive around in the Summer/Fall. SMILE.

Bottom line. We are very pleased with the XJ8 we got from Dave at “European-Cars”.


Expedia: A CONFIRMED Hotel ‘Reservation’ From Expedia Is MEANINGLESS! Not Worth A Damn.

A CONFIRMED hotel reservation from Expedia means NOTHING.

NADA.

All it means is that Expedia ‘accepted’ your reservation. It has NOTHING to do with whether the actual hotel accepted and CONFIRMED that reservation.

Got that?

Let me explain that to you again, and use the above as a real-life example.

Though I had the above Expedia hotel confirmation, with a confirmation number, the hotel, i.e., the Wyndham Philadelphia Historic District, had NEVER received my reservation let alone confirmed it.

The Expedia reservation number has NOTHING to do with the Wyndham. It is BUT an Expedia reservation number.

Wyndham confirmation numbers are much shorter, such as this.

Though I do not travel that much anymore I used to travel much, much more than most. For about 15 years of my life I used to travel, out-of-town, 3 to 4 nights a week. So I am no stranger to travel. Unless it is a hotel that knows me by name (and that used to be the case with many of the major hotels in Raleigh, N.C., since I was there every week) I never arrive at a hotel BEFORE reconfirming my reservation. As I have stated before I have contingency plans for my contingency plans. So …

This trip, to Philadelphia, blighted by the Brandon Bostian Amtrak 188 crash, was the first time, ever, that I personally have used Expedia. Never again.

Though I had the Expedia conformation, I was NOT going to arrive at a Hotel, with the two kids, until I knew that everything was OK.

So, I called up the hotel. They did NOT have the reservation. Never heard of it.

I called back again about 4 hours later. Same result. The Wyndham Philadelphia did NOT have a reservation for me.

I called Expedia.

I got to the bottom of it — BUT NOT thanks to Expedia.

The Wyndham was outstanding. I was very impressed.

Expedia, from what I can see, based on this experience, sucks.

So, be AWARE. Be VERY AWARE.

A confirmed hotel reservation from Expedia could have YOU sleeping on the streets.
